Strange intimacies, a Festschrift conference in honor of Neil Maclean will be online on February 19

Holly High, Terry Woronov, and myself have been planning a Festschrift conference in honor of our colleague, Neil Maclean, who recently retired from teaching in anthropology department at the University of Sydney. We reached out to a number of colleagues and friends of the department, and Neil’s former students, friends, and colleagues to ask them to contribute presentations reflecting on the impact of Neil’s work and their relationships with him. Now, we are happy to announce the program for Strange intimacies: A Festschrift conference in honor of Neil Maclean. (Follow the link for the program.)

We have planned an all-day event with a great mix of presentations from different folks, as well as opportunities for discussion, commentary, and audience participation. I am looking forward to a chance to discuss my current thinking on ethnographic citizenship in Papua New Guinea in the context of all the things I’ve learned from Neil over the years as well. Sascha Fuller will also present a video interview she conducted with Neil recently for this event. Due to the ongoing global pandemonium, we have chosen to hold this event on Zoom (of course!) but in a way this has turned out to be a boon, because it will make it possible for people to join from around the world. If you are interested, we hope that you will be able to attend virtually using Zoom starting at 9:30 a.m. AEDT (UTC+11) on Friday, February 19.

If you have not done so already, it would be a great help if you would RSVP at the Eventbrite event page linked above. We will send out any updates or corrections to the program to the RSVP list as well as any announcements about the event.

This event is open to all, so please feel free to pass along this message to anyone you think would be interested in attending. Thanks and I hope to see you there.
